The Greatest Generation is the cohort born from 1901 to 1927: people who were children or young adults when the stock market crashed in 1929, who came of age in the Great Depression, and who then fought or worked through the Second World War. Around 16 million Americans served in uniform between 1941 and 1945, and the large majority of them were born in these years. Afterwards, the same people used the GI Bill to go to college and buy houses at a scale no earlier cohort had, built the postwar suburbs, and became the parents of the Baby Boomers.
